On January 11, 2026 at approximately 6:00 PM, Sgt. Leaf and Ofc. Barisciano were dispatched to a residence on Windsor Place for an attempted residential burglary in progress. The resident, who was not home at the time, reported seeing individuals attempting to kick in the front door through his security cameras. Officers arrived on scene however the suspects had fled the area and were unable to gain entry to the residence. Through a thorough investigation by Detective Berger, he was able to identify one of the suspects involved. On February 9, 2026, a search warrant was executed and a 31-year-old male from Westfield, NJ was taken into custody. He was charged with 1st degree criminal attempt of a home invasion burglary, 1st degree conspiracy to commit a home invasion burglary, 3rd degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, 4th degree unlawful possession of a weapon and 4th degree criminal mischief. He was processed and remanded to the Essex County Correctional Facility pending a future court date. These charges against the defendant are merely allegations and they are presumed innocent until they are found guilty in a court of law. A special thank you to the Cedar Grove Police Department, Caldwell Police Department, Orange Police Department, Westfield Police Department and the New Jersey State Parole. Excellent work Detective Berger!Â
