On April 5, 2022 our police department was contacted by a Sergeant from the Illinois State Police. The Sergeant informed Detective Berger they had a victim in their state that fell victim to a bail scam that occurred in our jurisdiction. The victim sent $6500.00 to a vacant residence in our town believing he was sending the money to assist his grandson with bail to our police department. On April 6, 2022 Detective Berger along with the assistance of Sergeant Matrisciano, Sergeant Gomes, Officer Catherina and members of the Fairfield Police Department conducted surveillance on the vacant residence. While conducting the surveillance Officers’ observed a white Honda Accord which had heavily tinted windows and a Massachusetts registration driving slowly past the residence several times. The vehicle eventually parked on a side street near the residence and the suspect, later identified as Carlos Geronimo Peguero of Plainfield, NJ, 29, was observed by Detective Berger exiting the vehicle. Once the package was delivered Mr. Geronimo Peguero approached the residence and retrieved the package. Once the package was in Mr. Geronimo Peguero's possession he was confronted by Sergeant Gomes. Mr. Geronimo Peguero began to run attempting to evade the police. Mr. Geronimo Peguero was eventually apprehended and placed under arrest. Mr. Geronimo Peguero was charged with resisting arrest/ eluding officers, theft by deception, theft by unlawful taking or disposition and obstructing administration of law or other governmental function. Mr. Geronimo Peguero was transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility where he awaits possible extradition to Illinois to face charges. These charges are merely allegations and Mr. Geronimo Peguero is presumed innocent until he is found guilty in a court of law.
