On January 1, 2026, at approximately 12:14 A.M., Officer Rigas conducted a motor vehicle stop for a vehicle that had failed to stop at a stop sign. While Officer Rigas was speaking with the driver, he observed several indicators of someone who may be under the influence of alcohol. Officer Chiuchiolo arrived as backup and Officer Rigas had the driver, a 38-year-old male from Fairfield, NJ, step out of the vehicle so that he could conduct field sobriety tests to determine if he was safe to operate a motor vehicle. Upon completion of the tests, Officer Rigas concluded that the driver was unable to operate a motor vehicle safely and placed him under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence. The driver later provided breath samples for the purpose of testing. It is alleged that his blood alcohol content was above the legal limit. He was issued several motor vehicle summonses which included driving under the influence. These charges are merely allegations and the driver is presumed innocent until he is found guilty in a court of law.
